I'm an SA and considering buying myself a Blackberry. This would be for checking firm email (newer models work with OWA outlook, so no need to have access to the firm's server) and for personal email. Anyway, minimum plans are fairly expensive and I was wondering if we are allowed to expense any of the monthly bills? I remember reading something about being able to charge up to some amount per month of work-related calls/data but I can't remember exactly...
Also, I suppose I should ask those of you who have been around longer, is a Blackberry the best way to go? Maybe a Treo? Maybe no connectivity at all so I can't get hounded at home? Let me know. |

It will depend on your project budget. Talk to the partner, manager, or the controller....or whoever needs to approve you.
There are two types, one is a straight up ~20-30% off of your bill each month. There is a new one that came out in December for people who expense usage. If you expense usage you have to be in one of these plans (they are per-minutes charges). This fixed rate per minute plans also has data plans with some companies for as low as $12 or something like that. I think a Sprint Treo is the cheapest if I am not mistaken. You will have to be in the one of these plans in order to expense any of your usage fees. You are not supposed to expense them based on the 30% off your bill deal or whatever they used to have with each of the companies. "About the firm" and "corporate programs" to read about them. |

I think the firm will reimburse you for monthly Blackberry/Treo charges only if you are manager & up...
For everyone else, they will only reimburse you for your cell phone usage... |

CAUTION!
The firm restricts Treo Goodlink licenses to Manager and above ONLY, even if you are paying for the service yourself.
Go with the blackberry if you want to access your firm e-mail. |

| Why would you waste money on a blackberry when you can purchase a Sharpe for $1.25 and write "YUPPIE" on your forehead instead? |

LOL exactly. I mean, you're likely in front of your laptop from 8am till 8pm every day during the week, can't you take a break when you're out for dinner or at the airport?
I'll NEVER get a blackberry or a treo. They'll have to force the thing into my hand. I already screen my cell phone calls, why add email to it? |

I recently caught a rumor on the mill that the firm was considering purchasing a device, managing the costs on that device and giving them to everyone (probably M and above to start with, or something like that).
The reason I heard behind the rumor was that they wanted all the P's and D's to have mobile windows on the device so they could look at PPTs while at airports etc. -- so it implies a windows mobile device of some sort.
Anybody else hear this? Thoughts? |

I would guess the real reason behind switching is licensing costs. MS provided a "free" mobile device server that (of course) works with Windows Mobile devices and MS Exchange.
This means the firm won't have to pay a licensing fee for each device they connect to the exchange server. |

Had a conversation with the project partner about a month ago and he mentioned something about an initiative to get all levels some kind of PDA with Mobile Windows, at which I promptly laughed at leadership's supposition that everyone wants a leash.
Like others have mentioned, I'll NEVER willingly purchase a BB or Treo, and will not use one unless it's forced into my hand. I value being able to be inaccessible when and where I choose. |

Curious about how the blackberry works thru OWA, where you don't have to pay for the data charges? Can someone shed some light on this?
Thanks |

I have to admit, even as a simple C i have one that I purchased for myself... HOWEVER... Besides my calendar I don't use it for work!!! I use it for my personal email and chat, particularly in the airport or when I am behind certain firewalls. The other thing that it is good for is connecting my laptop to my carrier's data plan so that if I need to get online on a computer to chat with my sig.oth. I can wherever I am.
And so far, I have managed to not use this for business yet. I guess we will see how long that lasts!
As for the rumor of them spreading downwards from the M level... I have heard that too and while I look forward to not paying the extra price for the data plan, I don't look forward to the inevitable limitations on the device. |
