If you are connected to the firm's VPN, does it keep track of what you do on your computer. I spent quite some time at the office last week playing games online and buying random stuff on ebay because I was unassigned and had no work to do. One of my friends from another firm said that their company sees how much time they spend doing whatever task on their computer. Does "the firm" spy also?

They definitely can when you're connected to the firm's network or through Aventail, however I don't think that's exactly what they're looking for. As long as you're staying away from anything illegal, or porn sites I think you should be ok.

I don't think anyone actively monitors it. They log everything tho, and if an issue comes up partners can request the logs of all your internet activity (including messenger chat logs).

What if we use the laptop issued by the firm, log into internet through hotel's internet connection, NOT using the firm's VPN, and look at porn sites?

Does the firm have ways (e.g. invisible application running on our laptops all the time? snooping programs?) to see what we have visited on internet (e.g. URL, downloaded images, cached pages in Internet Explorer, extraction from automatically backed-up files)?

Thanks ...

From my knowledge they have a proxy server on the laptop which monitors all incomming and outgoing communications, even if you aren't using the VPN.
